Sept 23, 2012 Blount Co. After mulling over my report of Rusties yesterday, I realized I did not fully eliminate the possibility that they were Brewer's Blackbirds. Being so early in the season, I thought they would not have changed into winter plumage, thus the overall gray females and all dark males. However, the literature says they change in August. Although I thought I saw yellow eyes in one of the females, I can't confidently recall that I did. No iridescent color was noted in the males. Therefore, as it stands now, I am retracting my Rusty report until I can relocate these birds, hopefully this afternoon. I had my first RUSTY BLACKBIRDS (6) of the season today at the marsh near my house in Alcoa. My previous early record was in November. One SORA is back, but only heard, the marsh being very lush.
