TN-Birders,

Today's favorable flying weather brought wave after wave of Sandhill Cranes
over Pickett County this afternoon. From 1:15pm until about 2:00pm, we had
about 600 over our place, all headed northward. We live on the north side
of Dale Hollow Lake and the lake and steep bluffs evidently create wind
thermals on which they ride upward to gain altitude. It's interesting to
watch as they break up then try to reform higher up. I often wonder how
they decide just what is high enough and which bird finally gives the signal
to head north again.
