Clayton Ferrell 06/02/2011 Tennessee NWR Duck River Unit Pool 4 Humphreys County While headed to the upper bottoms, not really even looking for birds, I spotted a gray bird in my peripheral vision. Upon turning to look I knew I had seen something very different for me and the refuge. The long tail, black wings and gray body screamed scissor-tailed flycatcher. About the time I got stopped it had landed on a small twig sticking up in the farm field. I scanned it quickly with my binoculars and then immediately though of my camera...........................which dang it was in the office, BUT I did have the video camera. Upon jumping out of the truck to get the camera from the back seat I was reminded as to why I was headed to upper bottoms. A tractor and pump were quickly approaching. I just barely got the camera out and on the bird before I had to put it down because I was blocking the road. It quickly flushed from the noise of the approaching tractor. I watched it fly out of sight towards the Duck River. I never had a chance to go back and look for it again. Now I just have to figure out how to download the video off of the camera! Sorry but the bottoms are still closed to vehicle traffic. Cleaning up fallen trees across roads and flood debris on roads, levees and fields has consumed staff time such that actual road repair has yet to begin.
