I visited (9:30-12:30 a.m.; 8-16-03) this refuge in east Knox County (off I-40 Exit 402, follow signs) to work on the park dragonfly and butterfly (17 species!) lists, but took note of the birds present as well. Many of the species were singing. Bird list: Great Blue Herons Bald Eagle 1 adult N Bobwhites several calling, plus a male and female that got my heart going when I walked close to where they had been. Mourning Doves Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (3) Chimney Swifts Red-bellied, Downy & Pileated Woodpeckers Barn Swallows Blue Jays American Crows Carolina Chickadees Carolina Wrens Blue-gray Gnatcatcher American Robin Northern Mockingbird Common Yellowthroats Northern Cardinals Indigo Buntings Blue Grosbeaks - there were a lot of these around. If you haven't seen one before, it is hard to miss them here. Field Sparrows (very vocal) Song Sparrows Brown-headed Cowbirds (not in danger of going extinct here!)
