We had about 15-20 birders at Sharp's Ridge in Knoxville Saturday morning (30 April 2011). Most were with the KTOS public walk that I lead ... by the way, I need to apologize to a couple of folks that called and left messages on Friday, I didn't get them until about midnight and was afraid it was too late to return them. We had at least 53 species on the walk with several obvious misses of common species (like Downy WP) as we focused on migrants. We managed to get 15 species of warblers and I think most folks were able to see a good number of those though many were heard only. Best bird was a WILSON'S WARBLER near the gazebo. About 1 week early (as with most warblers this year). Another group of birders had this bird when our group arrived. Some folks got looks at the bird skulking in the honeysuckle but most just heard it singing. Some highlights: Wild Turkey, at least 3 Hairy Woodpecker, very vocal and offering several good looks Eastern Phoebe, pair nesting at WBIR tower again this year Great Crested Flycatcher, 1-2 White-eyed Vireo, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 1 Red-headed Vireo, several Cliff Swallow, 1 flyover Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 1 Blue-grey Gnatcatcher no thrushes for our group but others reported Swainson's Thrush Tennessee Warbler, 1 offering good looks... once we found it Nashville Warbler, 1 heard Chestnut-sided Warbler, 4+ Cape May Warbler, 2+ "Myrtle" Yellow-rumped Warbler, 10+ Black-throated Green Warbler, ~5 Blackburnian Warbler, 2-3 "Western" Palm Warbler, 2 Bay-breasted Warbler, 1 Blackpoll Warbler, 3+ Black-and-white Warbler, 2+ American Redstart, 3 Ovenbird, ~5 Hooded Warbler, 2-3 Wilson's Warbler, 1 Scarlet Tanager, 5+ Rose-breasted Grosbeak, ~5 Orchard Oriole, 1 1st-year male Baltimore Oriole, ~5 all ages and sexes Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
