17 Aug 2002 Shelby Co. incl Shelby Forest, Eagle Lake, Shelby Farms Woke up at 6 this morning, and noticing that it was relatively mild (for August) and that the cloud cover wasn't too bad (after the downpours of the last couple days), decided to drive north. In Shelby Forest, went to the river landing hoping for a Piping Plover or such. Well, no Whimbrel, etc. but there were 2 first year Laughing Gulls on a sandbar. And a few Least Terns. Warblers found included a Black-throated Green and 2 Worm-eatings, plus a Swainson's still singing. At Eagle Lake Refuge, there were 100 Cattle Egrets plus the usual Great & Snowy, and Great and Little Blues. And 2 Black-necked Stilts and 15 Blue-wg Teals. Also, a kettle of Broad-wings, at least 8 (early migration?), plus several kites and 2 Red-shoulders. One Broad-wing even dive-bombed a Red-shoulder. Stopped at Shelby Farms at 11:00 to check the ponds for terns. Saw 30 Black and 2 Forster's Terns, but could not locate the Least or Commons which have been seen there recently. Did see the Little Blue im. and a Great Egret, and 7 or so kites. I must have seen 25 or more kites (Mississippi) today. Some reside here at home. Found 70 species today, not bad for starting at 7:45 and not trying too hard (didn't even see a Red-wing Blackbird).
