May 21-22, 2005 Ensley bottoms Shelby Co. TN From Saturday to Sunday, the shorebird numbers dropped by half and some species dropped off the screen. Saturday, I had 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and 2 Stilt Sandpiper but none of either on Sunday. The 24 dapper Dunlin dropped to 5 and the White-rumped went from 4 to 2. Semipalmated both Plover and Sandpiper numbers went up with Semisands now far out numbering Least Sandpipers 50 to 1 and the Plover numbers going from 12 to 19. Pectoral Sandpipers were in the lower double digits and I had 2 Western Sandpipers as it continues to be the worst showing for them in years. Sunday afternoon 6 Black-bellied Plovers made a great showing with all but one dressed to kill. The first Black-necked Stilt young made their fluffy appearances Sunday AM and there are nests everywhere you look. Total shorebird species for weekend -13. Saturday, I had a Olive-sided Flycatcher on the road into the pits along with 2 Philadelphia Vireos plus a hen Wood Duck with 11 chicks that poised for a family photo. I also saw 2 small groups of Cedar Waxwings winging it northward. Mississippi Kites were feeding very high and almost out of sight but with bins you could pick them up from anywhere. A pair of Blue-winged Teal look as if they might set up house keeping, the mood is right as Mallards and Canada Geese lead fuzzy ducklings and goslings at every turn. Speaking of terns, Least Terns were seen both days feeding at TVA Lake. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
