June 13, 2009 Shelby Co. TN Not much happening at the "Pits" other than the large number of nesting Black-necked Stilts and Killdeer plus nesting ducks but no sign of the Whistling Ducks. A single Least Sandpiper and a male Spotted Sandpiper, the latter acting suspiciously like it is tending a nest. Western and Eastern Kingbirds are nesting everywhere with most now feeding young. Yesterday's total of 15 nests photographed included 8 Western Kingbird, 3 Eastern, 1 Scissor-tail pair (feeding young) and hybrid females at 3 nests. Mockingbirds have driven Westerns away from 3 locations where they were attempting to build. I saw one group of Western Kingbirds in a territorial dispute with 7 birds in a rolling dog fight, the most I could get in one photo was 6 birds in a tight group but it was a sight to behold. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
