Two trips to the pits this weekend produced a lot of shorebirds with birding
visitors from Mississippi, Arkansas and Illinois. As usual the birds allowed
us close up and personal views. There are still two active nests being attended
by Black-necked Stilts and young from fuzzy balls to flying teenagers were
seen. There were even some pairs of adults still hanging together, probably
failed nesters. One family group had 5 young plus mom and dad while other
family
groups have not been so blessed and packed up and headed south.

On the Mississippi River before getting to the pits, I had single Caspian,
Common and Least Terns and 3 Black Terns in breeding plumage floated or flitted
around the pits on Saturday.

The north wind kept a few birds coming and leaving on both days. The
following species were seen with high numbers from the counts: Black-necked
Stilt - 65
adults and 84 immatures with more probably overlooked in all the hidden
grassy pools. Killdeer - 524, Lesser Yellowlegs - 45, Solitary Sandpiper - 19,
Spotted Sandpiper - 5, SANDERLING - 1, Semipalmated Sandpiper - 365, Western
Sandpiper - 3, Least Sandpiper - 1135, Pectoral Sandpiper - 1060, Stilt
Sandpiper -
52, Short-billed Dowitcher - 1, and a single immature, male WILSON'S
PHALAROPE allowed us close views.

Good Birding!!!
