Today at 4:00 PM we observed a Short-eared Owl in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It was perched in the top of a snag on the right hand side of Hiatt Lane, about half way across the cove. It was before the bridge. Hiatt Lane is the second two-way gravel road that crosses the cove. After observing it perched for five minutes, an immature Northern Harrier buzzed it several times and it flew. We observed it in flight for another ten minutes, getting excellent looks as it flew directly over our vehicle. Other birds seen: Red-shouldered Hawk Red-tailed Hawk Eastern Phoebe American Crow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse Eastern Bluebird American Robin Hermit Thrush Dark-eyed Junco White-throated Sparrow Good Birding!
