I decided on the Shutes Branch Recreation Area on Old Hickory Lake in
Hermitage, TN for today's birding. A Prothonotary Warbler could be heard
singing on the heavily forested island about 200 yds. offshore as well as a
White-eyed Vireo. This island is also popular with Great Blue Herons and
Black-crowned Night Herons. Another warbler-like song that I could not
identify could be heard in the woods across the main road from the parking lot
as well as another White-eyed Vireo singing there.
A Canada Goose with a neck band bearing the number T79Y was by the edge of
the water and I was able to approach within 3 feet and get a superb photo of
this bird and its collar. I reported the number to the U.S. Bird Banding
Laboratory and hope to hear back from them soon.
All in all, seen or heard today at Shutes branch were:

Canada Goose 20- One neck-tagged T79Y
Mallard 40- Many babies
