I decided on the Shutes Branch Recreation Area on Old Hickory Lake in Hermitage, TN for today's birding. A Prothonotary Warbler could be heard singing on the heavily forested island about 200 yds. offshore as well as a White-eyed Vireo. This island is also popular with Great Blue Herons and Black-crowned Night Herons. Another warbler-like song that I could not identify could be heard in the woods across the main road from the parking lot as well as another White-eyed Vireo singing there. A Canada Goose with a neck band bearing the number T79Y was by the edge of the water and I was able to approach within 3 feet and get a superb photo of this bird and its collar. I reported the number to the U.S. Bird Banding Laboratory and hope to hear back from them soon. All in all, seen or heard today at Shutes branch were: Canada Goose 20- One neck-tagged T79Y Mallard 40- Many babies Great Blue Heron 2 Mourning Dove 4 Chimney Swift 10 Eastern Kingbird 3 White-eyed Vireo 2 American Crow 2 Barn Swallow 2 Carolina Chickadee 1 House Wren 1 American Robin 5 Northern Mockingbird 1 European Starling 3 Prothonotary Warbler 1- Singing on island Warbler sp. 1 singing in woods across road from area Song Sparrow 1 Northern Cardinal 1 Red-winged Blackbird 2 Common Grackle 6 American Goldfinch 3 Number of Species: 21 Tomorrow I think I'll try Summit Hospital Pond in Hermitage, TN.
