[TN-Bird] Sightings Report, 3 August 2014, Ensley Bottoms and surrounding environs, Memphis, Shelby Cty

Hot weather today, still a lot of water in some of the central pits, other 
areas dry as a bone. The big #5 Pit, has just the right amount of water,  
sludge flats, and vegetation to hold a good many birds. Black bellie wh duck 
broods hiding today, only three broods seen.

Ran into Mike Todd today on the Central levee pits. Several other birders down 
in the "Bottoms" today, QB Gray, Boyd Williams and his wife and Virginia 
Reynolds.

Comments:     80 degs and rising, on a sunny warm day. little or no breeze. 
kinda quiet as far as the birds go.

Belted Kingfisher  1     on the big pond sitting on the trnsmission tower.

Ensley Bottoms, Maxson Wastewater Lagoons(The Pits)/Earth Complex, Shelby, US-TN

Comments:     Got hot quick 80-90's, still air, lots and lots of flies.  Ran 
into Mike Todd today on the Central levee pits. Like he reported, Blk-necked 
Stilts are few and far between this year compared to the last three seasons. 
More and more birds coming in since last weekend. Several other birders down in 
the "Bottoms" today, QB Gray, Boyd Williams and his wife and Virginia Reynolds.
30 species
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck  14  -Three broods of young seen today 12, 5, 12 
various ages little fluff balls to youngsters who have lost their stripes.
Greater White-fronted Goose  2     Same two birds all summer long, don't know 
how long the bird with the injured wing is going to have it's buddy hang around.
Canada Goose  42
Mallard  9
Canvasback  1     Same bird that was reported here a couple of weeks ago, still 
hanging out with the summer time crowd.
Turkey Vulture  11
Mississippi Kite  2
Black-necked Stilt  5     3 juveniles also seen.
Killdeer  45     spreadout everywhere.
Spotted Sandpiper  5
Solitary Sandpiper  2
Lesser Yellowlegs  2
Stilt Sandpiper  2     First fall birds on the return trip south.
Least Sandpiper  500     easy this many and more.
Pectoral Sandpiper  100     This also may be a low count, but the Ms Kite kept 
them up and down.
Semipalmated Sandpiper  50     Same as the others hard to count but they were 
standing out.
Mourning Dove  7
Yellow-billed Cuckoo  1
Eastern Kingbird  3
White-eyed Vireo  2
Northern Rough-winged Swallow  10
Barn Swallow  10
Cliff Swallow  10
Northern Mockingbird  7
European Starling  1000     Starlings everywhere. Looks like they had a good 
breeding season, bah humbug.

House Finch  4     Hanging out around the maint shed yard.
