A little bit of rain (3-7 inches of it), some wind and Hail from the nine separate thunderstorms that rolled through today. The sun finally came out between #8 & #9 on my way home so I thought I would take a look at what's left if anything up at the North Treatment Plant. As all know the Mississippi is way up and going further up by the 10th. Backwaters of the Wolf River are flooding everything. North Entrance to the plant is flooded out. Windy conditions on the Lagoons. Last time this happened we got an Avocet for a week or two. Black-necked Stilts most common Shorebird a plenty but scattered as the lagoons are lacking dry landing areas, many are paired up. Killdeer scattered as well as Blue-winged Teal, a doz Can Geese, Mallards and a few N. Shovelers. 8 Dowitcher's were feeding in an area on the backside, about a dozen Least Sandpipers on one little spit of mud, and some other peeps further out. Snipe still found in the wet scrub hiding or feeding. Savannah Sparrows, Red Winged blackbirds and a couple of Meadowlarks in the fields. Only three Solitary Sandpipers seen today. No Lesser Yellow Legs or Pectoral Sandpipers at all. Zilch, zero far cry from the other day. Best find was a lone Willet standing out near a pair of Black-necked Stilts, settled down for a nap after a while. Hopefully the weather will calm some and dry the pathways for this weekends bird tours during the TOS State meeting. I will check with the Treatment plant supervisor to ensure we are still welcome this weekend after all this rain and high water surrounding the plant.
