North Treatment Plant closed to the public due to the flooding and road work/repair to prevent the airport and treatment plant from flooding. 4:15pm Recon Visit for tomorrows early morning TOS hike/visit. Went down to Ensley Bottoms, first stop was the TVA ponds: a lone Mallard drake, GB Heron and whoa...... a female Red Breasted Merganser, feeding on the big pond chasing minnows along the east shore. Barn Swallows, Killdeer, Starlings, and Morning Doves finished the pond count. Headed west to bunting corner near the outflow. Indigo Buntings plentiful, Dickcissels singing, a YB Chat called out several times from the middle of the foliage circle. Cardinals, Car Wrens, Yel rumped Warbler, N. Rough winged Swallows, Barn swallows and a Eastern Kingbird rounded out the visit. No Painted Buntings again. Made my way to the pits, RW Blackbirds, Morning Doves, Grackles, E. Meadowlarks, and Starlings all around. No Bobolinks seen or heard, was a bit breezy but warm and sunny. Water everywhere as the Mississippi is on the flood, lots of standing water after the heavy rains this past week. Lots of shorebirds scattered throughout the various lagoons and fields. Several hundred L. Yel Legs, half a dozen or so Grtr Yel Legs, good number of Solitary Sandpipers, couple of Stilt & Spotted Sandpipers, peeps included semi, least, western, and Pectoral(2) Sandpipers. The big pit held a good concentration of Wilsons Phalaropes. The middle bermed area of mud flats had standing water and high ground and was holding hundreds of birds of all the above species including some Dowitchers. BW Teal, Mallards, Can Geese, two Coots plus the best birds, two good looking Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. Blk-necked Stilts scattered around mostly in pairs some on nests. Tomorrows weather looks to be good hope all the birds stick around for all our out of town visitors.
