[TN-Bird] Sightings Report, Mon, 5 May 2008, Ensley Bottoms, The Pits, Memphis, Shelby County

Location:     TN 2 Mem, Maxson Wastewater Lagoons(The Pits)/Earth Complex
Observation date:     5/5/08

Notes:     Migration in full swing today at the Pits in the Ensley Bottoms
area. Shorebirds a plenty a great diversity and good numbers of birds not
seen often. Wilsons Phalaropes good views of and Picts. Blk-necked Stilts in
great numbers all over the property in all the waterways. Canada Geese all
paired up and sitting on nests or curbing the young chicks in line. Savanna
Sparrows still all over the levee's. Solitary Sandpipers along shoreline of
every pit. More of them this year than Killdeer. These last couple of storms
have really begun moving in the birds.<br>Pictures at

of birds are estimates due to the ever moving target, these birds were up
and down every couple minutes. Must have been a Raptor around. A Perigrine
or two were reported over the weekend by others.

Black-necked Stilt     80 +/-

Spotted Sandpiper     2

Solitary Sandpiper     100 +/-

Lesser Yellowlegs     450 +/-

Semipalmated Sandpiper  3 Could have been more if they would stay in one
place long enough to study and count.

Western Sandpiper     3

Least Sandpiper     450 +/-

Pectoral Sandpiper     150 +/-

Dunlin     5

Stilt Sandpiper     4

Dowitcher     3   (1 on pit #5 with the flocks and 2 on the new drainage pit
to the west)

Wilson's Phalarope     11

Mourning Dove     X

Barn Swallow     6

Northern Mockingbird     3

European Starling     20

Savannah Sparrow     25

Red-winged Blackbird     X

Eastern Meadowlark     4

Common Grackle     9
