Knoxville Area
Anderson, Knox, and Blount Counties
March 6, 2015
Noon to 4:30 pm

Lola and I made a loop in the Knoxville area looking primarily for geese and
ducks. We found the Snow, Ross’s, Cackling, and Canada geese species noted
previously at Cherokee Farms. Then we checked out the Louisville Point area.
Not much in the way of waterfowl but we did find a nice sign of spring with our
first Tree Swallows (10-12) and Osprey of the year. At Hitch pond and the
Ralph Phelps Road pond we had the most variety of ducks (Gadwall, American
Wigeon, Mallard, Wood Duck, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, and Lesser Scaup). Ish
Creek embayment had one group of Redheads, scaup, Buffelheads, and Ring-necked
Ducks. On the way back to Oak Ridge, we stopped by Concord Park and found very
little other than another Osprey. Our last stop was the Solway boat accesses
on Edgemoor Road in Oak Ridge. There were numerous Redheads, a nice group of
Canvasbacks, a couple of Ruddy Ducks, and numerous scaup and Ring-necked Ducks.
Osprey must have arrived in force as we found one more on its traditional nest
on a power line transmission tower along the Clinch River.
