Nov. 17, 2002

After getting home last evening from Pace Point on Kentucky Lake in
Tennessee, I learned of Dave Roemer's experience with loons in Kentucky on
Saturday that paralleled mine. I decided to see what happened in other areas.
I would be interested if anyone was at Guntersville Lake in Alabama or any of
the other areas in north Alabama over the weekend and what the numbers looked
like there.

Here are the numbers from Indiana and Kentucky taken from the net; as there
was little mention of any such numbers in Illinois or Ohio, it must have been
a narrow concentrated band of migrating loons that moved over the weekend on
the cold front.

Nov. 16, 2002 at Eagle Creek, Indiana - 545 Loons
Larry Peavler was at Eagle Creek early Sunday morning and counted
840 loons migrating out and only 10 were reported there later in the day.

Nov. 16, 2002 at Prairie Creek, Indiana - 642 Loons

Nov. 16, 2002 at Lake Lemon, Indiana - 598 Loons and 2 Red-throated with only
52 loons reported the next day

Nov. 16, 2002 at Barren Reservoir, Kentucky 800+ with 748 in one sweep of the
scope by Dave Roemer.

Nov. 16, Pace Point on Kentucky Lake in Tennessee - I counted 719 loons in
one sweep with 3 Pacific Loons. This number was down the next day to a more
normal for the season 300+ loons.

Total loons counted at these 5 locations a hefty 3604 loons, all in a thin
band through the area. Any other comments or additions to this Spectacular
Loon Movement!

Good Birding!!!
