On Wednesday, Dec. 11, Howard Langridge (Elizabethton, TN) and Bryan Stevens (Hampton, TN) were at Musick's Campground on South Holston Lake in Sullivan County, TN, between 2-2:30 p.m. Present was a Surf Scoter (female), 2 Common Loons, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 5 Horned Grebes, 1 Eared Grebe, 2 Great Blue Herons as well as Ring-billed Gulls and Pied-bill Grebes. The Surf Scoter was first observed within Virginia waters, but then flew into Tennessee waters. It was great to also see the scoter in flight! When we left, she was not far offshore from the concrete boat ramp to the right of the spot where most birders park when scanning the lake at Musick's. The Surf Scoter, as well as one of the Common Loons, gave us great, textbook-perfect looks.
