I was able to briefly bird Cove Lake St Pk Campbell County, TN this morn from 10:30 to 11:15. I only walked the short loop back trail mainly to see if the SWAINSON'S WARBLERS have returned. There are definitely 2 birds there, and I imagine they are already setting up territory since they were singing in 2 different places. Both were much further back from the trail than last year which I had thought might be the case with all the dead Pines. They like a tree canopy above with a thick understory. I don't believe the amount of Pines down will effect them too much as long as the thickets are there. For all you Privet bush haters, these guys sure to prefer it here instead of the traditional "mountain" habitat of Rhodedendron. The habitat they are in at the lake is like that in coastal NC where I had them breeding on our property. One of these birds sings differently than the "traditional" song. He only has a 2 syllable whistle on the end instead of 3. This bird is in the same location as last year and I feel sure the same one since the song is exactly like one there last year. Also seen or heard this morning were 11 species of Warblers in a short time: BLACKPOLL WARBLER 1 (Spring first-seems early) YellowRumps/ Prairie/ Blk th Green / 3 Prothonotary/ Common Yellowthroat 2 Yellow-throated 4 / WORM-EATING (first in park for Spring) 1 Pine/ Ovenbird Swainsons Warbler is #11. No KY yet?? I had Scarlet Tanager and YThroated Vireo singing in the yard this morning.
