Feb. 17, 2012 This afternoon, I ran into Chad Smith at Ensley, after I had checked TVA Lake. I counted 196 Lesser Scaup and 44 Greater. Much lower numbers than yesterday but Greater Scaup numbers have consistently run about 20% of this flock every day; you just have to check them closely Chad and I headed down to Robco to see if the Long-tailed Duck might be hanging out down there but no luck on it but..........The first bird I saw was a FRANKLIN'S GULL, then a COMMON LOON and we found all three species of Mergansers with a nicely plumaged female COMMON MERGANSER. Lots and lots of ducks but all had moved back to the west end of lake making for the typical difficult Robco viewing. Back at Ensley, we had good looks at the rufous morph Red-tail plus a couple of adult and immature calurus, eastern adults and immatures plus a bonus an unusual, intermediate dark morph Harlan's with a banded tail........Watched TVA Lake till late but the Long-tailed Duck was a no show. Just after 5 the Black-bellied Whistlers all whistled off to McKellar Lake. Good Birding!!! Jeff R. Wilson / TLBA 6300 Memphis-Arlington Rd.
