Greetings, Why would anyone want to pish shorebirds?? If this is a referral to birds along the coasts, all those birds look alike except for size anyway. Of course, I use to say that about sparrows, too... that they all looked the same. I have frequently been told when I learn all the other birds then I will finally enjoy shorebirds...but I find there are too many plumages plus they all turn and move in the same way at the same time. I expect too that it may take me several decades to learn all the other birds.. all the intricacies of their lives. So the shore birds are safe from my pishing for awhile longer.... a long time longer. Tess Buladean, NC PS Carol Reese, Wally and OL COOT have some informative info about butterflies and bird droppings. And I now recall the time a California Condor flew very low directly over us along the Little Sur River near the coast and the professor yelled, "Keep your mouths closed!" So this is how butterflies find nutrients they need.. ??!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sheb Marsh <sapsucker@xxxxxxx> To: <tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 7:38 PM Subject: [tn-bird] Re: Tess Cumbie and Hummers and Pishing > > > > Sheb has now told us all what we must stop doing! Ah! found it. Don't play tapes or pish when birds are nesting. Seems like a pretty good idea to me, but Wallace appears to be implying it is not with his sarcasm. > > That was my only instruction in the whole post. For the rest of it I was asking for a little self-examination into the ethics of what we do as birders and to please try to minimize disturbances. I knew there would be some who wouldn't agree with me, but a discussion of birding ethics needn't be a nonsubject on this list and maybe it has given some of you something to think about. > > The thing that set me off was the suggestion that it was effective to pish shorebirds and that led to a discussion of ethical birding behavior. Just because something is possible doesn't mean we should do it. It just isn't necessary to pish shorebirds, but I'll bet some of you, a minority, are going to go out and see if it works. > > Sheb Marsh > Paducah, KY > -- > __________________________________________________________ > Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com > http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup > > Get 4 DVDs for $.49 cents! plus shipping & processing.
