Spring Birders,

I have been checking the TN list faithfully waiting for posts of new
Spring arrivals, but have seen very little activity. Is anyone birding ?
Or just not posting to the list?
After being out of town and other things that has kept me from
birding early am, I ventured out this morning with the purpose of
looking for Spring migrants. It was a gorgeous morning after the fog
lifted.
Campbell County / TN - Old Highway 63 through a section of Royal Blue WMA
that always has good Spring Warblers. (Start this road near Shoney's in
Caryville (adjacent to I75) and head N. through the pass. If anyone wants
more, email me for directions.
I heard my first BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER .07 m. in singing on
the left. I wondered how long he has been in, since I have not been
through there in 10 days, and I have had them earlier before. Along this
7 mile stretch, I heard 3 more.

LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES are very happy I suppose with all the recent
rains and the fast rushing creeks. They have probably been in over a
week. I found a total of 7! It was hard to hear them with the rushing
waters. One lovely individual decided he would walk along the edge of the
road!! Great look. There was a small rocky parking area beside the creek
and he was walking around there like he owned the place.
Next were 3 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS along the route. A drumming GROUSE
was a real thrill at 2.2 miles in. My first ever heard in Royal Blue. 3
BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS were heard and one seen.
Turning right, I drove back through Titus Hollow which has a section of
open brusy areas. Here I saw my first Spring- BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
sporting some cool eye patterns.
A coyote was chasing a rabbit through here right in broad daylight!

    Other birds of interest were 4 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS/ 1 RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH/ 8-10 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. Juncos were still present too.
    I had a warbler -like song at 2.3 m that I could not identify.The
beginning sounded much like a LA Waterthrush but had a crisp clear ending
- but different than a Swainson's Warbler that is so similiar. (Its prob.
too early anyhow for Swainson's) It sang for about 15 min. and I could
not get a visual on him.. Maddening.

Wildflowers are also starting to put on a show through here- Trout
Lily
(mostly all bloomed already) Toad Shade/ Trillium/Rue Anemone/Blue Phlox
and others I did not take time to ID yet.

Charlie M-Glad you are posting some things from the Smokies. Now, what
are you other folks seeing?
