Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont Great Smoky Mountains National Park Blount County, TN Walker Valley Today I've been out in the woods with some high schoolers from Shelby County, KY. Being older kids, they better appreciate the birds (and are much better at finding them) than a lot of the younger kids that I teach. So I got to stop and look more often than usual! And it was pretty active, even sans bins. I saw: 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo Many thrushes, FINALLY. Been missing them this year. The few I was able to ID were Swainsons. Song Sparrow seem to be coming in. Maybe I'll be lucky and get one of those great birds like Chuck and Dean have had recently... 1 Black-throated Blue Warlber. A co-worker told me she had one in about the same exact spot several days ago. Hmmm. GOBS of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. We've been seeing groups of 12-15 regularly for nealy 2 weeks now. They love the Dogwoods. We see them crossing back and forth above the athletic field regularly. Good birding!
