My wife (Kit) and I spent last weekend at the Bottoms with Jeff Wilson. This weekend was some of the, if not the best, time I have spent birding this year. The up-close looks at the shorebirds can not be matched in TN. Neither can Jeff's tutelage of the plumage differences of these "common" peeps. At such close range the rufous difference on the backs of Westerns and Semi's can be clearly seen -- when pointed out by Jeff. The close looks at first-year birds were equally stunning and educational. Where can you see numerous first year shorebirds at twenty yards? At Cheyenne Bottoms in central KS, I have seen thousands of White-rumpted sandpipers in the spring. I had never seen a first-year fall White-rumpted. It didn't look like the White-rumps I have seen or those in most fieldguides, except for the solidly white rump. Quite a treat. Make the trip and meet up with Jeff, you will be rewarded. You may be even directed to the best Bar B-Q in Memphis. Winston A.
