I took a rather quick walk on the Turkey Creek Wetland Park & Greenway in west Knox County this afternoon beginning at 1:10 pm. Was walking quicker than usual as the skies were threatening and I wanted to get as far as I could before it began to rain (still hasn't started to rain). I hadn't gone far when a Least Flycatcher stopped me in my tracks. It was perched in the low vegetation on the embankment between Earthfare and the fitness station, calling (either a one noted call or two notes very close together). Got a great look for 20-30 seconds of its bold white eyering and bright white wing bars on dark wings. Its head did not show a peak and there were no yellowish tones that I noticed on the bird. What a surprise! Another surprise was when a hawk suddently burst from a tree just off the path and immediatley dropped into the wetland; all I saw in the second or two I had was red barring on its chest. When I went to Turkey Creek for the Knox County Fall Count on September 27 it was the first I had visited the place since May 26. I admit I was bummed by the new construction and just didn't feel like returning. But I found good birds there September 27, so I returned a week later, found more good birds, and went back today. Highlights of my 3 recent visits: September 27 8:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Wood Duck Magnolia Warbler Northern Waterthrush Common Yellowthroat Rose Breasted Grosbeak and a rather late Orchard Oriole October 4 10:30 a.m. - 2 hours Ruby-Throated Hummingbird 3 Tennessee Warblers Bay-Breasted Warbler (great look at it on the chip trail) American Redstart 3 Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks October 9 - 1:10 pm - 1 hour Least Flycatcher Rose-Breasted Grosbeak Carole Gobert, Knoxville, Knox County, Tn _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Trusted email with powerful SPAM protection. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/177141665/direct/01/ =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
