Today, for the first time, I had Turkey Vultures in our yard in Norris. Not just flying over the house, which occurs frequently. Instead a flock of a little over 100 roosting in the large oaks and pines in our yard and our neighbor's yard. The birds were present when I arrived home from work about 5:45 PM. Unfortunately, my parking the car, carrying stuff into the house, and bringing the dogs from their outdoor pen into the house caused many of the vultures to move a couple hundred yards away, to more woods further from any houses. The dogs could smell the vultures, but never saw them, and I quickly got the dogs inside so that they wouldn't scare the vultures further away. During the remaining daylight, a few single birds flew in low from the northwest to join the crowd. The total count was about 120. I presume these birds are migrating northward and will resume their travels tomorrow. The section of Norris in which we live is heavily forested.
