2-6-2011 Radnor Lake Davidson co. Dave Hawkins and I had a first for Radnor on Sunday. As we walked the road, some turkeys started calling from the south hillside. All of a sudden, about 25 turkeys exploded into the air and flew all the way across the lake, landing on the far shoreline! I had never seen that many at Radnor before, and never seen any fly across the lake. It was bizarre. A few minutes later another group of 20 or so did the same thing, and then a third group a little later. I looked up on the hillside with my bins and saw several Toms strutting around with their tails spread. We walked the road and came back to the same spot and a huge group came flying back across the lake and landed high in the trees right over our heads! They stayed several minutes and then flew up the hillside and walked out of sight. It was amazing, and really loud with all the crashing in the tree branches and the noise they made with their wing flapping. There always seems to be something new to see over there, but this was amazing. And we also saw an accipiter chase a Pileated out of a tree!
