Sounds a lot like the problem of declining populations of Northern Bobwhites and Eastern Cottontails here on the other end of the state. Ask most quail or rabbit hunters why there are less birds or rabbits now and you'll get a whole list of culprits. Coyotes, Red-tailed Hawks, owls, raccoons, 'possums, skunks, etc. I have neighbors who quail & rabbit hunt and they always complain that there are hardly any birds or rabbits left to hunt on their farms due to those blame hawks and coyotes. Funny that they never mention the habitat which has changed drastically just in my lifetime. I remember walking those fields as a boy and seeing the extensive brushy fence rows separating every field. Now I can look out across those fields and see field after field with very little vegetation separating any of them. Where would the rabbits and quail go if they were there? If the hawks are eating them all why do I have rabbits and quail in my yard but their fields don't? Could it just maybe be that little factor called preferred habitat?
