Dear Birders, I have recently encountered a bird on a number of occasions. My technicians have noticed these starling like birds being flushed in front of the tractor while bushhogging fields. I did think these would be woodcock or an occasional goatsucker. Two days ago this experience happened to me. I was in an upland field cutting brush and blackberries at least 8 foot tall and i flushed this bird. There was no water or wetland around. The Duck River which runs through Yanahli is about a mile away. I saw the bird and it was a rail, it flew up and fluttered into the bushes about 20 yards. It flew with feet dangling like i have seen soras do many times, but the habitat is way off base. It happened again when we were cutting fields at Sheldon's Ferry in Montgomery County, yet this is next to the cumberland river and the fields were somewhat wet. Has this happend to anyone on an upland site. Not many birders are out in 8 foot blackberries beating the bushes looking for rails in September, but i may have found a niche that they could be using in migration.
