Bells Bend, Davidson Co. Hickerson Rd. Sod Farm, Coffee Co. Tuesday, 2012 Aug. 21 Tuesday morning I birded the sod farms along Old Hickory Blvd at Bells Bend in Davidson Co., looking for Upland Sandpipers. Best I could do was a SOLITARY SANDPIPER in a wet field across the road and an immature LITTLE BLUE HERON on Cleeses Ferry Rd. In the afternoon I drove down to the Manchester area and using Ruth Luckado's excellent directions, I checked out the Hickerson Rd. sod farm. I quickly found 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERs feeding in the sod on the left side of the road after driving past the right angle bend by perhaps 0.1 mile. The birds hid briefly in a low spot that contained some Johnson grass before reappearing just as the McWhirters and Don Davidson drove up. When I left about 3:10pm, 2 of the birds could also be seen from the road perhaps 0.1 miles before you arrived at the right angle bend. Although the views were distant, it was great to see the Uppies in the open, similar to my sightings of this species on sod farms not far from where I grew up in NJ. Many thanks to the previous posts about the birds and Ruth's spot on directions.
