It seems that we TN birders have a couple of choices for good birds across
the state line. I had considered making the long trip to KY for the Snowy,
but decided to cut my driving WAY down and head west for the Vermilion
Flycatcher at Big Lake in northeast Arkansas. The Snowy is without doubt an
AWESOME bird, (I would love to see another one) but I had to go for the lifer
in the Vermilion, and wasn't disappointed. It took me a little longer than
Jeff to find it (as usual), but within about 15 minutes of looking around the
headquarters the fiery little male came in and entertained me for quite a
while. I got some decent shots, but none to match the shot Jeff got. Also of
interest on the day was quite a concentration of Red-tailed Hawks just across
the state line in MO on I-155. A series of fish ponds held a concentration of
Red-tailed's like I don't remember seeing before. I had 7 Red-tailed's in one
tree, and 24 in view at one time. Back in TN, I had season firsts for myself
for several species. Blue-winged Teal were encountered in small numbers
several locations along the river, as were both Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, and a single Pectoral Sandpiper. Lots of singing going on, with
Yellow-rumps tuning up on several occasions along the levee this afternoon.

Good birding!!!!
