Jeff Wilson just called me and asked me to post that the Vermillion Flycatcher found by Bud and Alice Johnson (from Dresden) yesterday was still present this morning. The bird, a first year male, was flycatching from the chain link fence at the Reelfoot Airpark in Lake County. It was catching insects down on the ground and then flying back to the fence. Jeff said he got one quick photo of the bird. He said that it disappeared before he could get another shot. He said he would continue to look for the bird throughout the day to see if it comes back. There are several Reelfoot Lake area records for this species and most records are from December. This is however the first report of this species in several years. Hopefully this bird will stick around for a while for others to see. It would be a nice bird to get on the Reelfoot Christmas Count in two weeks as well! Jeff also said that he had a light morph Rough-legged Hawk near Mooring in Lake Count on his way up there this morning. I'm sure Jeff will provide more details later but I just wanted everyone to know in case anyone wants to try for the flycatcher.
