I did a very brief trip to a couple of spots in the Cedar Hill area yesterday and saw my first Vesper Sparrow of 2012. Last year around this time I was seeing them regularly in several places. Not so this time around. I also had a Loggerhead Shrike atop the same cedar tree where I spied two week before last. Could they be thinking about nesting? Chipping Sparrows, which have been noticeably absent in my area this winter, have returned and are trilling like mad. Late in the afternoon as I was walking my dog I watched one of the Cooper's Hawks that frequents our place ambush an unfortunate Meadowlark. Too bad it couldn't have chosen one of the starlings. Also, I found a broken egg shell in the yard. The size and color (blue) suggests it was from a Robin. This morning started on a dispiriting note as I saw three roadkill owls, 2 Barred and 1 Screech, on the way to work.
