On Monday, June 24, 2002, I looked for and found the Mourning Warbler on Grassy Ridge. I watched it for about four hours. It's territory seems to becompletely in TN. I did not see a female. The bird was not singing a fullMOWA song so if you are going to take the hike up to look for it be awarethat it may be singing something different from what you know. The songsounds like a husky common yellowthroat, "Weedeater, weed". Please try not to trample too much of the vegetation. On my way back from Grassy Ridge, I observed a Vesper Sparrow feeding along the Appalachian Trail beforeJane Bald (after Jane Bald is Round Bald than Carver's Gap). This is the first of its species seen on Roan this year. I saw one Vesper Sparrow inthe same place last year. I never hear vespers singing on the mountain. Allan J.
