FRI 18 FEB 2011 Snapps Bridge, Washington Co., TN D. Holt I have been watching 4 large stick nests on the Nolichucky River in Washington Co., TN, just downstream of Snapps Bridge on river right. Today there were three Great Blue Herons on them. The nests are best viewed from the roadside on river left near the bridge, but they can also be seen, more distantly, from the cemetary at New Harmony church where we often park to scan for the albino Red-tailed Hawk that lives in the area. Just look across the middle of the plowed field near the river at the large multitrunked Sycamore tree. A scope would be helpful to observe details from the cemetary. Just a thought about the Fort Henry Dam heronry: some enterprising student could make some very detailed observations of the nesting process there. The view from the parking lot at the Dam Overlook is from above the nests, counts of eggs and nestlings, and timing of developments could be recorded. Anyone have a student in need of a project?
