June 3-4-6, 2011 West TN Mississippi River above flood stage north of Memphis still around 30 at Memphis. Lots of roads still closed due to water and washed outs. Least Terns were found on every piece of water, another poor breeding year for these poor birds. Tipton Co. Water still blocks most of bottoms with fewer viewing spots. White-rumped and Semipalmated Sandpipers plus one LAUGHING GULL. Lauderdale Co. Same trouble with water below the ridge. Upper Lower Hatchie NWR - 1 singing BELL'S VIREO for second year. Lower Hatchie NWR void of birds, not one duck, heron or Egret? Hwy 88 open to Great River Road with very few scattered White-rumped and Black-necked Stilts, few Great, Little Blue and Snowy Egrets and hundreds of Least Terns. Dyer Co. Water everywhere, Mississippi River up to levees, but higher areas drying fast, very few large waders, Green Herons busy trading about, few White-rumped, Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers. Lake Co. Slim pickings except at historic sites, void of birds most everywhere else. Pretty warm with 100 index, so hot, I saw 5 Horned Larks perched up on twigs well off the ground,100 plus White Pelicans scattered. I stopped counting Black-necked Stilts at 155 and nests at 31, a lot of nests now on dry ground and few will survive the day and night time ramblings of coons and coyotes, which I saw both wandering in the open. A pair of Ring-necked Ducks with the male attentively watching as a female appeared in the late afternoon to feed; she was not present or in view on other visits during the day. Male Blue-winged Teal (9) and Shovelers (4) Ruddy Ducks (2), where last week they were pair with females, may indicate nesting. Eagles everywhere while the Osprey on Reelfoot numbers were down, maybe high winds dropped some nests. Shorebirds - Semipalmated Plover- 2, Killdeer, Black-necked Stilts ++, Spotted Sandpiper, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs- 8, Semipalmated, Least, Pectoral Sandpipers- 2, Dunlin and White-rumped Sandpipers.
