I finally got to write up a few notes on other west TN birds from 16-18 May 2012. We found small numbers of blue-winged teal all over west TN this week, including at Ensley and President's Island (Shelby Co.) and in several places in Dyer and Lake Co. 16 May 2012 TVA Lakes, Shelby Co. 1 winter plumage Common Loon Several Black-bellied Whistling Ducks flying around President’s Island, Shelby Co. Western Kingbird – 5 (2 pairs, 1 lone bird) plus 2 birds at a usual spot on McLemore Rd just a mile or so from Pres. Island. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher – 2 pairs, both with females on nests Painted Bunting – 2 males White-winged Dove- 1, brief flyby of one bird on Channel Ave. 17 May 2012 Reelfoot NWR, Walnut Log Rd. (Obion Co.) Quite a nice morning walk with 20 species of warblers, but no transient flycatchers found: Northern Waterthrush 1 Black-and-white Warbler 1 Prothonotary Warbler 22 Tennessee Warbler 2 Kentucky Warbler 4 Common Yellowthroat 1 Hooded Warbler 1 American Redstart 3 Cape May Warbler 1, a very drab gray female Cerulean Warbler 1 Northern Parula 12 Magnolia Warbler 3 Bay-breasted Warbler 1 Blackburnian Warbler 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 2 Blackpoll Warbler 2 Yellow-throated Warbler 2 Black-throated Green Warbler 1 Canada Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 A volunteer at the refuge said a pair of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks has been frequenting the ponds between the visitor’s center and the shop all spring; however we did not see them. Sheeps Ridge Rd, at the end of the road where you used to drive to Island 13 (Lake Co.): As previously noted by Terry Witt, a colony of Bank Swallows are nesting in the new bank on the right. We counted at least 47 nest holes that appeared active. Yellow Warbler -1 Black Bayou, Phillippy Unit (Lake Co.) Bobolink – 4 in the taller grass by the one pond with water on the road along the north end of Phillippy. The pond here had 10 species of usual shorebirds with a dunlin and one short-billed dowitcher as a highlight. Black Bayou Refuge, Handicapped Hunting area Water was almost gone, hence no marsh birds, but 9 species of shorebirds, incl. 4 gorgeous Dunlin. Also, lots of dead fish and black vultures. Yellow Warbler - 1 18 May 2012 Moss Island WMA, Dyer Co. Rhodes Lake Blackpoll Warbler – 1 Tennessee Warbler – 1 Willow Flycatcher - 1, singing One Olive-sided Flycatcher on top of a large dead tree out among the small crop fields along the main road.
