May 7-8, 05 Shelby-Lauderdale Co. TN Saturday I started looking at the high river for the umpteenth time and finally found 2 Caspian Tern. On Sunday, I had 7 Caspian Terns and 2 Ring-billed Gulls on McKellar Lake. The shorebird numbers at the Pits in Ensley continue to drop. There are more White-rumped, Semipalmated and Stilt Sandpipers but I could only find one Baird's and one Western Sandpiper both Saturday and Sunday. A total of 18 species were recorded. I missed the Western Kingbird on Saturday but after quite a search Sunday it was relocated. It seems the bird has not settled on a territory but it will get serious as the others hopefully return. Eagle Lake Refuge has no shorebird habitat as expected but a sky scan pulled out a soaring male Anhinga. Mississippi Kites were seen at all locations in good numbers. Lower Hatchie is loosing its water and held a few Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral and Least Sandpipers. At Chickasaw NWR, a 3 hour walk produced 84 Greater Yellowlegs, 61 Lesser, 245 Least Sandpipers, 66 Pectoral, 4 Solitary, 1 Spotted, 9 Dunlin, 7 Long-billed Dowitcher and a single pair of Black-necked Stilts. Peregrines were present at the pits Saturday and Sunday Morning and Chickasaw on Saturday afternoon. I had an up close and very personal look at a pair of Diamondback Water Snakes mating. I was able to get some nice shots and will post them soon. Two Lesser Yellowlegs flew in and craned their necks watching the couple and paid me little mind as I hunkered close by. I was within 8 feet of the very large female Diamondback and her small, amorous suitor. I left them after 30 minutes with the male still grinning in earnest and the female looking bored.
