May 25-26-27, 2008 Memphis, Shelby Co. TN Over the long weekend, I visited 4 known breeding sites for Western Kingbirds in Memphis and found 5 active nests at 3 locations. One nest being built in Frayser is paired by a second generation Western/Scissor-tailed female with her mate of last year, a male Western Kingbird. Strange, that for the previous two breeding seasons this female has started a nest on the exact same utility pole and each year has moved the nest location before laying eggs. I guess habits are hard to break even for birds. I also relocated a male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher on President's Island that I've seen only a couple of times in the last month on the wooded side of the island but now the bird has moved near the previous nesting sites on the industrial side and appears to be waiting for a female.
