I spent my lunch time today observing the Western Kingbirds at the Allen
Steam Plant. All four adults were delivering food back to the two nest sites.
There are still little border disputes but nothing that a few fluttering
flights don't reconcile as they quickly have to get back to feeding the
young.

At one time an adult female Kestrel landed on a wire south of the main road
at a distance that I thought too far to matter but immediately one adult from
each nesting territory flew directly over my head to confront the intruder
and both assisted the Kestrel in finding another perch much farther south.

If I was correct in my observations on Saturday that the young were just
hatching in the western most nest, these birds should be out of the nest
around the 22nd or 23rd of this month. It should be an exciting weekend as
the first returning shorebirds will make their presents know that same time.
Last year the Western Kingbirds led the young away from the area in just a
couple of days and they were difficult to find there after. I believe this
was partly due to the multiple shrike nests in the area. This year I have
seen only two nestings and these shrike groups have generally move away from
the area and are not concentrated around the kingbird nests. There might not
be as much pressure for the protection of the young westerners this year and
we may get to enjoy them a little longer.

Good Birding!!!
