8/3/03 Cheatham WMA (Cheatham Co.), Cross Creeks NWR (Stewart Co.) and Duck River Unit Tennessee NWR (Humphrey's Co.), TN 7am-5pm Best bird of the day was an immature WHITE IBIS found with some LITTLE BLUE HERONS at Cross Creeks NWR. The bird was found on the furthest of the three ponds directly below the refuge headquarters. The day started well with cool temps and cloudy skies which made for some surprisingly good passerine birding for early August. Along the roads through and around the Cheatham WMA I managed to find 10 species of warblers, all of which are breeders, but still, it's August! Warblers included NORTHERN PARULA, 3 BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, 2 HOODED WARBLERS, KENTUCKY WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, 3 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. Vireos were also not in short supply as 4 species were found including WARBLING, WHITE-EYED, YELLOW-THROATED and RED-EYED VIREOS, a bird we began to think was mythical about this time last year. Cross Creeks had little to offer other than the White Ibis, but Duck River was very productive. Despite all of the water the past week there was still some decent shorebird habitat. Shorebirds included 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 150+ KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 10 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 22 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 200+ PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 1 juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Also at Duck River were 6 BLACK TERNS and 1 CASPIAN TERN. There were scads of waders there also. Great Egrets led the way with easily 200+, but Little Blue Herons weren't far behind with at least 100 and about equal numbers of Great Blue Herons with a few Snowy Egrets thrown in for good measure. This is a usual sight in west Tennessee that isn't found many places in middle Tennessee. All told the species total rounded off to a nice even 100 for the day. Good Birding!
