I saw a juvenile DAR (direct autumn release) whooping crane from the viewing gazebo at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co., Birchwood, this morning. Additionally, two different pairs of adult bald eagles were in view at the same time in trees with old ? heron ? nests. Wouldn't it make for great public viewing if these two pairs were to 'renovate' those nests and raise young there where anyone with good binoculars or viewing scopes can follow the action? The International Crane Foundation provided a link to a good newspaper story on whooping cranes in Illinois. Maybe these whoopers will soon be in Tennessee!
