I stopped by Clay Lake today after work. I was surprised to find 39 Willets in
the rain, resting on the mini-peninsula we call "the point". This small,
man-made lake has been very productive since we started birding it, but it
should be noted it's on private property, and I have not spoken to the owner
about birders using it. The land is owned by a trucking company who gutted the
property, selling the dirt to a nearby landfill. This left a small lake that,
when when water levels are right, produces glorious shorebird habitat. The
owner does not live near the lake, and I've never had any trouble at all
birding here, but I ask that if anyone stops by to be respectful of the
property and of anyone who may stop and ask what you are doing. Also, please
view from the gravel only, do not walk down into the lake bed to look for birds
or to get photos. I don't mean to sound fussy, but this is a very important
spot for Wilson county, and I would hate to see it become off limits. It's also
worth noting the small gravel drive/parking area can become very muddy as you
get closer to the water.
Sorry if my late posting prevented people from chasing the Willets, but I've
just now had time to write a proper post explaining the situation at this spot.
