11-7-14 Radnor Lake Davidson Co. This afternoon, while enjoying the waterfowl that Jim Arnett posted about earlier today, a Winter Wren popped up at the lake edge along the road about the midway point of the lake. Two Horned Grebes are still present there, and two female Canvasbacks were mixed in with the many Ring-necks, maybe the same ones Jim thought he saw there on Sunday. I also had an interesting observation of what may have been a struggle between a snapping turtle and a duck. The duck (all I could see was a dark head at the far side of the lake) was flapping furiously and I thought it was just bathing, but after several minutes realized it was trying to get free from something. Its head would go almost underwater at times as if something was pulling it down. It managed to flap along the surface for about 25 yards very slowly, but then stopped and struggled some more. Eventually it succumbed to its foe, and disappeared underwater. There are huge snapping turtles in the lake, and I know they eat ducklings, but I had never seen one take an adult before. Any other possibilities or thoughts? Also, at the east end several Yellow-rumps and Titmice were mobbing a White-breasted Nuthatch which was peering out of a woodpecker's nest cavity.
