Today, the Hairy Woodpecker that showed up in my yard yesterday was still present. Much to the dismay of my resident Red-bellied's. The male RBWO spent all afternoon in hot pursuit of the Hairy Woodpecker (also a male). They put on some pretty spectacular displays chasing each other from tree to tree. Actually it was the Red-bellied that did all the chasing. The Hairy was just trying to get a bite to eat, and he succeeded several times to steal some of the peanut suet. These guys really were fun to watch. The Downy's just steered clear of the whole thing. I wonder if the Red-bellied and the Hairy can peacefully share a territory? Anyone out there have them both in your yard? I've been waiting almost 3 years for a Hairy Woodpecker to visit, and I'd sure like it if he took up residence here.
