I was down in Franklin county this morning and stopped at a couple spots on Woods Reservoir. Hundreds of horned grebes on the lake, smaller number of ducks and a decent number of common loons. Highlight was a flock of 26 White-winged Scoters, most female/immature, a flyby of 9 Surf Scoters, and 2 more likely female/imm white-winged scoters sleeping a long way off from the dam (couldn't see a wing patch, but it can be hidden, and they didn't fit for sleeping surfs from what I could see in the wind and shimmer when they looked around a couple times very briefly). Other notable birds include about 20 Common Goldeneye, 6 lesser scaup, 1 greater scaup, 1 female red-breasted merganser, and a couple bald eagles. Here's to the crazy cold weather!
