This morning I took a quick drive through one of my favorite birding routes that runs through a section of Royal Blue WMA near Caryville, TN. (Campbell County) I was specifically hoping for Cerulean Warbler, but none seem to be in yet or chose not to sing. This road is only about 7 miles long, but is always great for Spring Warblers in very good numbers for such a short distance, as well as a brilliant wildflower display today made up mostly of Blue Phlox and Trillium. Most numerous were Black Throated Green Warblers (38+!) They seemed to be everywhere. Great numbers for less than an hour of birding. Hooded Warblers were well represented with 12, as well as Black and Whites singing in full force (14). At 3.5 m in, I heard my first Spring YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. Furthur along the route, I heard 3 more for a total of 4. I have not been here is several days, so they may have come in before today. 2 OVENBIRDS (my first Spring) were another mile along, as well as 3 AMERICAN REDSTARTS (first Spring for me) 4 Louisiana Waterthrush were heard, as well as one singing a variable song on the end. This is the bird I tried to locate a couple weeks ago with a strange song. I finally saw this one today. Sometimes I guess they just sing different than their papa did. Yellow-Rumps were singing along with Ruby-Crowned Kinglets adding to the chorus's to sort through. A pair of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS appeared to be mighty friendly to each other calling incessantly and diving upon each other. I heard or saw 22 Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers / 7 Eastern Phoebes / 3 White Eyed Vireos and a host of resident species. RUFFED GROUSE were heard drumming in 2 different locations apx. 3 miles from each other. Now , if I could just SEE one in Campbell County I would be happy. In fact this year is the first time I have heard them there in 4 years... Must not have been at the right place at the right time.
