April 22-23, 2011
West TN Yellowlegs- Plus

Running flooded areas in Lauderdale, Dyer and Lake Counties produced these
high numbers of Yellowlegs taken from tally cards.

Highway 88 - Lauderdale Co. from Porter Gap to Obion Bridge
Lesser Yellowlegs - 488+ Greater Yellowlegs - 321+ - 6 Black-n  Stilts

Great River Road - Dyer Co.
Lesser - 670+ Greater - 120+ - 8 Black-n  Stilts

104 Highway - Big Boy Junction to Great River Road -Dyer Co.
Lesser - 345+ Greater - 214+

Great River Road - Lake Co.
Lesser - 1445++ Greater - 423+ - 17 Black-n  Stilts

Highway 79 west of levee + Mississippi Levee
Lesser - 4680++ Greater - 1332+ - 22 Black-n  Stilts
High count was Friday afternoon- fewer birds on Saturday due to waters
rising.

On these 2 days, there were well over 10,000 Yellowlegs using the flooded
fields in these 3 West TN Counties. I've seen concentrations like this only
on some large minnow pond operations in central Arkansas.

Other species of note not mentioned in previous postings for these days
off flooded 79 Highway:
 3 female Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Ring-necked, 2  Lesser Scaup, 21
Shovelers, 140+ Blue-winged Teal, 9 Green-winged Teal, 43  Pied-b Grebe,
7 Snowy Egrets, 8 Little Blue ( 3 pied / 5 ad), 132  Ring-billed Gulls and
2 Herring Gulls (1 -3rd yr/ 1 ad). One male Yellow Warbler landed at the
water's edge at my feet, took a drink and then headed North.

Good  Birding!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
