April 22-23, 2011 West TN Yellowlegs- Plus Running flooded areas in Lauderdale, Dyer and Lake Counties produced these high numbers of Yellowlegs taken from tally cards. Highway 88 - Lauderdale Co. from Porter Gap to Obion Bridge Lesser Yellowlegs - 488+ Greater Yellowlegs - 321+ - 6 Black-n Stilts Great River Road - Dyer Co. Lesser - 670+ Greater - 120+ - 8 Black-n Stilts 104 Highway - Big Boy Junction to Great River Road -Dyer Co. Lesser - 345+ Greater - 214+ Great River Road - Lake Co. Lesser - 1445++ Greater - 423+ - 17 Black-n Stilts Highway 79 west of levee + Mississippi Levee Lesser - 4680++ Greater - 1332+ - 22 Black-n Stilts High count was Friday afternoon- fewer birds on Saturday due to waters rising. On these 2 days, there were well over 10,000 Yellowlegs using the flooded fields in these 3 West TN Counties. I've seen concentrations like this only on some large minnow pond operations in central Arkansas. Other species of note not mentioned in previous postings for these days off flooded 79 Highway: 3 female Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Ring-necked, 2 Lesser Scaup, 21 Shovelers, 140+ Blue-winged Teal, 9 Green-winged Teal, 43 Pied-b Grebe, 7 Snowy Egrets, 8 Little Blue ( 3 pied / 5 ad), 132 Ring-billed Gulls and 2 Herring Gulls (1 -3rd yr/ 1 ad). One male Yellow Warbler landed at the water's edge at my feet, took a drink and then headed North. Good Birding!! Jeff R.
