Thanks everyone for your kind remarks...my head is getting big and puffy so stop it.... Back to birds, please! I had communicated with some people off-line about teaching birds, especially mockingbirds to come when called. I trained the mockingbirds at work very quickly (it was like they had been waiting for me to do this, it was so instantaneous). I got out of the car with a large sweet Oriental persimmon in my hand (my family grows them down in Mississippi), and made a lot of big "pishing" sounds and even called "mocker, mocker, mocker". They came over to the big Foster hollies by the parking lot immediately and watched me as I put the fruit down and walked on in the door. Maybe 5, maybe 10 seconds passed and they landed by the persimmon and took a peck, then dug in. Now I am putting the persimmons on the brick outside sill of my window and if I feel like favoring somone else at the building, I will put one on theirs. The birds don't wait for my "pishing" anymore, but fly up to the nearest tree when I drive into the parking lot. (They know my car, in other words.) This got me interested in "hand-taming" and I found an article online that featured a Bob Fulcher with the Tennessee state parks who used a "cheating" method...using a clothed dummy as a feeder, and then substituting himself for the dummy. Is he, by chance, a member of this bird-line? If not, does anyone know him? I would like to interview him for an article.
