T. E. Maxson Waste water Treatment Plant Lagoons Shelby Co TN May 20, 2012 Unfortunately I wasn't quick or deft enough to get a picture of the band my future daughter-in-law spotted on one of the many Black-bellied Whistling-ducks we saw at the Pits today. The pair we were watching was disturbed by a third bird and flew away before I could get my camera centered in Jeff Wilson's scope. If this turns out to be a pair nesting here, it would be so interesting to relocate that bird and track that band! The Pits and President's Island are a bonanza of nesting activity: Black-necked Stilts, one brood of two puffy chicks, numerous nests with eggs close enough to count them, uncounted others in every pool at the pits; Red-winged Blackbird nests slung in weed stubble there, too. Jeff showed us Western Kingbird nests and others on territory at several locations. One Scissor-tailed Flycatcher nest has a female parent that could easily be taken for a male, with a long tail and bright salmon axillaries, until the male shows up and outshines her; and, notably, the Western Kingbird/Scissor-tail hybrid female is sitting on a nest. We didn't see her mate. We looked for but did not find a White-winged Dove. TVA security drove by while we were at TVA Lake, but did not stop or speak to us. They drove by again while we were looking for a Painted Bunting in the usual place beyond the steam plant, but we stayed in the car and again they didn't stop. We didn't find a Painted.
